Our pets mean so much to us and are important members of our family. A portrait can be the perfect celebration of that special bond which exists, or has existed, between us - a lasting tangible memory.
After receiving many requests over the years to paint animal portraits including dogs, cats (large and domestic), rabbits and even donkeys, Pennie’s Pet Portraits was finally launched in September 2017, since when I've completed all the pets in the portrait gallery.
In an ideal world I work from my own photographs, however, more often than not, this can prove impossible as the pet may have passed on or be situated abroad or too far away, so in this situation, I work from the client's own digital photos. If I can be sent a video of the pet at play or in its home surroundings, it is much better for gauging the character and personality of my subject.
Depending on the work I have in hand, I usually finish a commission in two weeks, longer on the run up to Christmas, and then I hand the work over to my wonderful framer, Sarah of The Picture Framers, to complete the work for the client. I work out of my Studio in Ashford Square, Eastbourne, East Sussex where I have worked as an artist for over 20 years.
I work mostly in pastel, both soft and oil, which I find best for getting to grips with my subject. I enjoy the intimacy that working in pastel creates. Larger works, however, dictate the need for paint.
I have clients in the UK, Switzerland, Italy, France, USA and Down Under in Australia. Shipping abroad can easily be arranged at a not unreasonable extra cost.
